PALM SPRINGS--When it comes to fashionable music festivals, it doesn’t get any better than Coachella. So in spite of unseasonably chilly weather and a bout of torrential rain preceding the weekend, we packed our hippie chic best and headed out to Palm Springs in search of the best parties and people.
There was no shortage of fashion brands clamoring to make their presence known amongst this stylish scene: First we hit up the Guess and Lovecat Mag's Smoke & Mirrors Party that drew the likes of Vanessa Hudgens (channeling her inner Tiger Lily with a dramatic feather headpiece) and beau Austin Butler, while Jamie Chung, Bryan Greenberg, Josh Hutcherson and Josh Henderson relaxed poolside with UV Vodka snow cones [Ed. note: 'Guess' that's better than Vodka jello shots?'].
Then, over at the Lacoste L!VE pool party, Diane Kruger, Josh Jackson, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Lauren Conrad proudly rocked the preppy brand head-to-toe while sunning stylishly poolside and taking in party attractions including gourmet food trucks, a pop-up shop, an HTC mobile charging station, pedicures, a braid bar, speed boat racing, panoramic photo booths and more. Whew! We hope no one went speed boat racing with wet nails and a freshly braided mane.
And finally, the most fashionable Coachella party of them all: Mulberry’s exclusive Where the Wild Things Are-themed poolside bash at The Parker Hotel, where pretty young things Emma Watson, Kate Bosworth, Lily Collins, Laura Love and many more frolicked among kitschy inflatable cushions printed with Wild Things.
“Emma [Hill] has done a phenomenal job with the brand," Bosworth gushed. "I seriously want every single piece in the collection. She really knows how to dress a lady!" As for the scene--an empty pool and lots of everyone checking everyone else out--Bosworth seemed to read all of our minds. “It’s so high school sometimes!" she said. "People get so self-conscious at these things. They end up just standing around and staring at each other within their own little groups. It’s a nerve-racking experience. You never grow out of high school sadly.”
As for her Coachella style tips, the actress, who cites Alison Mosshart from The Kills as inspiration of her own, glanced at her boyfriend and laughed, “Wear your boyfriend’s jacket! I wore Michael’s army surplus jacket last night because I didn’t have anything of my own, and I was like, ‘Babe…? I need this!’ and took it right off him. It worked with my whole look—a Vanessa Bruno t-shirt dress and Wellies.”
Atlanta de Cadenet Taylor, a veteran of Coachella since age 15, said she’s “so over trying to look cool in some elaborate outfit and being miserable and uncomfortable all day,” while Emma Watson (who was also celebrating her birthday over the weekend) and Lily Collins bonded over their first-ever Coachella style experiences.
“I’m totally new to this, so I bought some vintage denim cut-offs and old beat-up secondhand boots to wear," Watson said. "Hopefully that will get me through anything this weekend!”
As for Collins, who came armed with a camera of her own to snap black-and-white photos of her friends, she's into the fashion freak show. “I think this is the one place where you can throw on a bunch of crazy things that you would never ever wear and no one even cares," she said. "There are people wearing animal costumes out there…I already saw a tiger and a turtle. I mean, I’d never do that, but there’s individuality all around here and that’s awesome.”
As for the best swag of Coachella? The actress modestly shrugged and stretched her arm out proudly. “I’m in it for the wrist bands! I want as many as I can collect. I need proof that I’ve been here!”
