Until this past January, Versace hadn't shown its couture Versace Atelier line since 2004. The collection and format--a small presentation set on gilded stairs Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris--received mixed reviews at the time.
In her review of the show, Cathy Horyn said "The presentation had a tension that might have been eliminated had Ms. Versace just staged a normal show." Style.com's Nicole Phelps agreed, writing, "The only off note: a rather glitzy, cheaply constructed set that didn't live up to the glamour of the moment she was channeling." Perhaps she reads her reviews because Donatella Versace plans to change the setting on format for her next Atelier Versace presentation.
She just announced that on July 1 she'll stage two runway shows for Atelier Versace at the Ritz in Paris, which is due to close at the end of July for a lengthy renovation. The location has a special poignance for Donatella. She said in a statement:
“It is with tremendous emotion that I return to the Ritz where I shared so many special moments with my brother. The closing of the Ritz Paris for two years represents the end of an era but also the beginning of a new one, so to be able to show Atelier Versace there one last time will be a memorable milestone.”
Gianni Versace staged several shows there, including his last one in 1997. We're expecting the usual Versace opulence and glamour in the perfect setting for it.
