We figured it was a long shot but we were really hoping that Johnny Depp would actually show up at Monday's CFDA Awards in some fabulous fedora-plus-tiny scarf-plus pinstriped suit-plus arm party get up to accept his style icon award. Alas, it is not to be.
Johnny Depp will pick up his award in absentia as he is currently on location in the Navajo Nation filming The Lone Ranger, WWD is reporting. Comme des Garçons' Rei Kawakubo, who is set to receive the International Award, will also be a no-show; she's busy prepping her June 29 men's show in Paris. It's hardly surprising that Depp, a free-wheeling hippy-ish 'I do what I want' kind of guy, and Kawakubo, who is notoriously reclusive and doesn't even appear at the end of her own fashion shows, won't accept their CFDA awards in person. The CFDA even expected it: “[We knew] that there might be a chance that both would not be able to attend but felt both were deserving no matter what,” a CFDA spokesperson told WWD. What is surprising is that both Depp and Kawakubo asked John Waters to accept their awards for them. Waters is a long-time Kawakubo fan and directed Depp in Cry Baby. The CFDA called it "a complete coincidence." We call it just plain awesome.
