We learned this week that the CW officially picked up the Sex and the City prequel, The Carrie Diaries, and after getting lots of sneak peeks at Carrie's 1980s wardrobe (by Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman), we finally have a trailer by which to judge the show.
If you're a Sex and the City fan, you'll recognize some of the same gimmicks from the original: Carrie's disembodied musings about life, cheesy sex jokes, and ridiculously poufy skirts. The 1980s styling is weak at best--if that was really 1984, Carrie would have bangs teased at least three inches straight up and her boss would have shoulder pads up to her earlobes. But we are willing to suspend disbelief for a bit, as you had to do in the original, too. (A writer with that wardrobe? No.)
It will be a great replacement for Gossip Girl fans missing the fashion, but we hope this doesn't spawn another 1980s resurgence. Unless that means Wham! will be coming back too. Anyway, it's cute and silly, but Sarah Jessica Parker will always be Carrie to me.
