Editorials featuring women looking like they've had the shit beat out of them are nothing new. Photographer Tyler Shields (the infamous Birkin bag arsonist) got into trouble back in 2011 for an editorial featuring Heather Morris dressed as a happy housewife and sporting a black eye. And then there was that editorial showing 15-year-old Hailey Clauson getting "strangled." Lovely imagery, right?
Well, Bulgarian mag 12 has just taken it up to new levels of "WTF." An editorial shot by Vasil Germanov titled "Victim of Beauty" shows six impeccably made-up models with various traumatic injuries--a slit throat, black eye, and ripped out ear and lip ring for starters. One looks like she's been burned with acid. Another sports a "bloody smile," with her mouth ripped open, slitting her cheeks. (Game of Thrones aficionados will recognize this wound as the result of the commonly-used threat "I'll give them a red smile from ear to ear.") Wow, who knew violence against women could be so 'arty.'
There's very little information on 12's site about what the editors are trying convey, except shock value of course. Under the editorial it reads (translated): "Recommended Parental Controls: pictures are not recommended for persons under 16 years. And for the faint hearted." Well that's an understatement.
Violence against women exists way too frequently in real life for us to want to look at it in a fashion magazine and we kind of hope shoots like this disappear. What do you think of this spread?
