Remember Abaeté? The line initially started back in 2003 as a line of swimwear inspired by designer Laura Poretzky's summers in Rio. The suits garnered a cult following Poretzky expanded Abaeté into a full ready to wear line shown to critical acclaim on New York's runways from 2007 to 2009. Abaeté quietly shuttered in 2010, Laura Poretzky became Laura Poretzky Garcia (she married musician Diego Garcia and had a baby), and we hadn't heard much from her...until now.
Poretzky Garcia has returned to her swimwear roots with a new swimwear line, Été Swim, which made its debut on Moda Operandi this weekend. The line came about thanks to Moda's co-founder Lauren Santo Domingo, who brought Poretzky Garcia together with Lily Dickerson Maddock, formerly the head of knitwear label liDi, who heads up the business side as the President of Été.
So what's Été all about? Why another swimwear line and why now? We asked Poretzy Garcia.
Fashionista: Tell me about the line, what's the inspiration? Poretzky Garcia: My partner Lily and I blended our American and European backgrounds to create this new line of swim wear. Été translates to summer in French and the line is simply about beautiful swimwear. We want to create timeless swimwear with modern constructions, fabrics, and unparalleled fit. We were inspired by the greatest bathing beauties: Brigitte Bardot, Verushka, and Romy Schneider.
Why have you decided to return and launch this new line with Moda Operandi? We decide to launch with Moda Operandi because of our friendship with Lauren Santo Domingo. She was the person who brought Lily and I together because she knew we would make an excellent team.
What do you think swimwear was missing right now? We feel that simplicity and "back to the basics" is important in swim right now. We were tired of looking at triangle bikinis in every print imaginable. We wanted something more simple and beautiful with a modern vintage feel.
Any plans for the future? Will just be swimwear Été or are their plans to expand to more categories? We are focusing on swim for now. We want to master it--both in the look and the technology. We want our pieces to be timeless and last a lifetime.
Été is available now on Moda Operandi Prices range from $230 to $300.
