For a woman who sadly didn't live a very long life, Marilyn Monroe sure seemed to eat a lot of cake (as illustrated above). She also managed to become one of the most recognizable and imitated style icons of the last century. Last year's My Week with Marilyn biopic, with Michelle Williams in the lead role, started a whole new wave of Marilyn-mania, leading to an onslaught of Monroe-influenced fashion spreads.
This year's Cannes Film Festival was dedicated to the fallen star, who's still proven to be majorly marketable: 50 years after her untimely death aged just 36, MM is still snagging the covers of major glossies (see this month's Vanity Fair), and this fall, MAC will launch a cosmetics collection based on Monroe's signature beauty look. And we can only hope it contains a pencil for drawing on beauty marks.
So, on what would've been her 86th birthday, let's remember the happy, yummy times in Ms. Monroe's life--with a bunch of pictures of her eating cake. No matter the occasion, whether a press event, birthday celebration, movie wrap-party, or one of her three weddings, she always managed to look glamorous and totally delectable. And that's what we'd call a true fashionista.
