Rachel Comey is pretty much the official outfitter of downtown New York cool girls--or, really cool girls everywhere. So, naturally, we were pretty excited to visit the brand's showroom to check what was in store for Resort 2013.
We were greeted by an adorably pregnant Comey (she's due in September), who is without a doubt, one of the best dressed pregnant ladies we've ever met. "I find myself still being able to wear my [line]," she said with a laugh. "I'm like, who knew I designed maternity also!"
Of course, Comey was only joking (though a cool maternity line is actually not a bad idea!)--but there is something special and effortless about a collection looking just as cool on a six-months pregnant woman as on a five-foot-eleven model. And that's precisely what we love about the brand.
For Resort 2012, Comey says she tried to create pieces that she herself would want to wear in the transitional seasons, when resort is on the retail floor longest. There are a handful of beach-ready options--from a high waisted bikini to pretty dresses that could double as bikini cover-ups--but in general the designer created pieces that work for regular, old city life--a lifestyle that we for one can relate to. (This may shock you but we don't actually jet off for a couple of months around Christmas. Or buy a whole wardrobe for it.)
To that effect, Comey's collection was full of everyday wearable pieces, like comfy sweaters, simple blouses and pretty printed dresses. This season, the designer also delved deeper into denim than ever before, producing a pair of tailored denim pants, a vest and a jacket. Obviously, the shoes were amazing. We were particularly obsessed with a pair of high-heeled loafers, and slip on sandal wedges.
Another favorite ensemble of ours was a pair of shorts and blazer done up in a wallpaper-esque pink flower print. Comey says she worked with a woman who owns a library of rare and historical textiles to create the print. "I want to do a special collaboration with her one day just to promote her," she told us. "But then the secret would be out I guess!"
