In publishing, September is sort of like Final Exams: Each magazine is given a grade--in the form of ad pages--and that number is generally indicative of how well the mag fared all year, and what direction it'll move in next year.

After years of thinner, less ad-filled September issues (thank you recession!), magazines' ad pages are starting to pick up. Some titles are even boasting a record-breaking amount of ad pages and September will bring their biggest issues ever. Other titles weren't so lucky.

Magazine: Vogue Cover Girl: Lady Gaga Ad Pages: 658 Up or Down from 2011? +74 Everything else we know: This is to be Vogue's biggest issue ever. They're also currently holding a contest on Facebook where readers try to guess the total amount of pages in the book.

Magazine: Elle Cover Girl: Katy Perry Ad Pages: 400 Up or Down from 2011? +51 Everything else we know: This will be Elle's largest issue ever.

Magazine: Harper's Bazaar Cover Girl: Gwen Stefani Ad Pages: 360 Up or Down from 2011? +51

Magazine: Marie Claire Cover Girl: Miley Cyrus Ad Pages: 237 Up or Down from 2011? +45 Everything else we know: This will be Marie Claire's largest issue ever and the fifth record breaking issue this year for the mag (March, April, May and August among them).
