It's that time of year again. Nope, we don't mean Comic Con--we're talking about September glossy cover reveals. September issues are traditionally the cash cows for any fashion mag, and whoever graces the cover can make or break that month's sales. Today WWD revealed a slew of covers--and we've added some reveals of our own.
Overall it's not a very surprising list. They're all celebrities, and generally fall into two camps: the tried-and-true Hollywood diva and the cute, popular up-and-comers. And with a few exceptions, all of these ladies have appeared on the titles they're covering this September in the past. A good track record is obviously important. A few spoilers? Kim Kardashian didn't land any covers, and neither did Gwyneth Paltrow or Kate Moss, both of whom can usually be counted on every year.
So without further ado, click through to get a glimpse at the fall glossy cover stars.
Who: Lady Gaga famously graced Vogue's March 2011 issue sporting a pink bob, which was the second-best seller for the glossy
What: As we previously reported, she'll cover the all-important September issue this year apparently wearing purple, and shot by Mert and Marcus.
Why: Her perfume is FINALLY launching.
Who: Katy Perry, who covered Elle's March 2011 issue.
What: No details about what the cover will look like, but we're pretty sure she'll be recognizable, unlike her recent Vogue Italia spread.
Why: Her March cover was the title's second best selling issue that year. She also just released her autobiographical movie.
Who: Victoria Beckham, who appeared uncharacteristically casually styled on the March 2010 issue.
What: We will assume that VB will wear one of her own creations, but that's just a guess.
Why: Because she's awesome. Duh. And that March 2010 issue was Glamour's third best selling issue that year.
Who: Jennifer Lopez.
What: A sultry and sexy cover? Probably.
Why: Because the lady can flat out sell mags. She's perfect for InStyle, which brings celeb fashion to the masses. Her September 2009 cover for the mag was their best seller that year.
Who: Selena Gomez, who's graced the June/July 2011 cover of Teen Vogue
What: Selena's looking grown-up yet still age appropriate, with a cute chambray shirt tied to show a bit of belly.
Why: She's sort of the quintessential Teen Vogue girl. Also she's launching a line of nail polish and starring in the animated movie Hotel Transylvania.
Who: Lucy Hale, who stars in Pretty Little Liars.
What: She's a first-time Cosmo cover girl.
Why: WWD points out that Cosmo girls have been skewing younger lately. This one seems like one of the riskier cover choices of the bunch, just because she's not as high profile.
Who: Penelope Cruz, who last appeared on a W cover in 2008, pre-Stefano Tonchi.
What: W goes with less obvious cover choices, and also tends to favour serious Hollywood actresses.
Why: She's starring in the new Woody Allen flick, To Rome With Love.
Who: Eva Longoria, who is a first time Lucky cover girl.
What: Eva has the glam Hollywood thing nailed, but we'd love to see her styled casually on the cover.
Why: Just starred in For Greater Glory. We suspect she'll have a lot more projects in the works now that Desperate Housewives is over.
Who: Jessica Chastain, who appeared on the ensemble Hollywood issue cover of the mag in March of this year.
What: She wears designer clothes really well, so she'll undoubtedly look very Hollywood glam.
Why: She's everywhere.
Who: Gwen Stefani, who is no stranger to magazine covers.
What: Bright lipstick is virtually assured.
Why: Her first No Doubt album in ten years is dropping.
Who: Miley Cyrus, whose March 2011 cover was the title's third best selling last year.
What: Who knows? One can only hope that she'll be styled without a midriff baring shirt.
Why: Erm, not sure. She's getting married? She does a lot of yoga?
Who: Emma Stone, according to Styleite. It would be her first cover for the glossy.
What: She has made the rounds of covers this summer and has never looked bad, so we're pretty sure she'll be gorgeous on this one too.
Why: The Amazing Spiderman. Also, she is just plain amazing.
Who: Nicole Kidman, who is usually a safe choice for a title like InStyle. For V, it's surprising.
What: We are looking forward to seeing how V styles Kidman. It can go any way.
Why: She's got a few movies opening in 2013, according to Styleite.
