Special effects top coats--like holographic, crackle, and sparkle--are now a nail polish aisle staple, with everyone from Essie to Deborah Lippmann releasing versions. But there's one that has had the nail polish blogs gushing for the past month and it's definitely worth a closer look. (A huge thanks to my nail polish-addicted friend Lauren for bringing it to my attention via my Facebook page: "OMG! OPI black spotted...help me!!! I die!!!" to quote her verbatim.)
OPI's "Black Spotted" is a black top coat that works sort of like Shatter, but with much cooler results. (Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of crackle topcoats. I think it looks sloppy. Feel free to disagree with me.) Fashion Polish describes it as an "oil on water" effect and that's pretty accurate. It's kind of like water marbling without the hassle. We trolled the nail blogs (see above) so you could see how the effect looks on various creams, metallics, and neons.
Pretty cool, right? Now here's the bad news. OPI Black Spotted was released as a French Sephora exclusive as part of the OPI Spiderman collection. In the US, the brand gave us a green shatter, but those lucky French girls got this new marvel. We reached out to OPI who told us that the top coat won't get a US release. So what's a nail polish hoarder collector to do?
EBay, obviously. We found several listings on the auction site ranging in price from about $10 from a UK seller (watch out for that international shipping!) to a whopping $55.
The OPI rep assured us that lots of fun things are forthcoming for US customers, but do you sort of want to get your non-spotted hands on this top coat?
