We knew that Victoria Beckham was going to cover Glamour's all-important September issue, but we didn't know the full extent of her involvement. Not only is she lounging naked in a bubble bath (!!) on the cover, but she also guest-edited the issue, which you can preview here.
Glamour's ad pages are down this September compared to last, but banking on Beckham seems like a smart move, since she was one of their bestsellers last March. The lovely VB was quite involved in the whole process and took the job very seriously--she called herself a "control freak" and even *gasp* woke up early for morning conference calls for the issue, according to WWD. "I wanted to put my stamp on the magazine," Beckham told the trade. "They were really open to my ideas, like I wanted to show [actress] Lily [Collins] with not a lot of retouching. I have a very strong vision of what I like and it's cool and a little more edgy."
In addition to the Lily Collins feature, she spearheaded a fashion story with Brit band The Wanted because her kids are fans, and worked on a "bold eye makeup" beauty feature (which we hear she also essentially art directed). We also hear from a subscriber who already got her hands on a copy that the "Guy of the Month" is hubby David Beckham. How generous of her to share him with everyone!
She also scored her own editorial and interview, excerpts of which are on Glamour's website now:
For her 'Don't's list:
I even made my own list of Glamour fashion Don’ts to keep out of the issue: boat shoes (unless of course you’re designer Alber Elbaz or on a boat!), Bermuda shorts, nose rings, Crocs, and American tan tights (that’s nude pantyhose to you).
On why she doesn't smile:
Do you know, I don’t know?! I actually used to smile a lot in pictures. I think I only stopped smiling when I got into fashion. [Laughs.] Fashion stole my smile! I’ve created this person. And I’m not saying that’s not me, but I wouldn’t say that’s the whole me…```` It’s an armor that goes up.
On her mom reading Fifty Shades of Grey:
I even bought my mum the book! But every time she tries to engage in conversation about it, I kind of dodge the subject. I don’t really want to talk to my mother about S&M.
On having baby number five:
I’d never say never about another baby. It’s a juggling act—a career, family, a husband who’s busy. But I’d never say never!
Beckham's quirky tiara-wearing, bubble-blowing cover is a continuation of EIC Cindi Leive's new cover direction. Since the cover redesign in March, WWD is reporting that single copy sales of Glamour are up three percent, so it must be working. Pretty sure this one will fly off the shelves.
