The Clothes: So yeah, if any design label could take this print and texture-mixing trend by the horns and blow it straight out of the water, Custo Barcelona is the one to call. To sum up the pretty cray graphics and texture-heavy Spring 2013 collection in a few words: Interior design-chic. The color-happy Spanish label went bananas with fabrics, prints, intricate textures and mixing and matching with pieces that were reminiscent of home décor. Each outfit featured one or more of the following: Patchwork quilting of metallic, prints and sequins, shaggy fringe, crocheted embroidery-embellishments, doily hems, upholstery-like brocade and vintage wallpaper-esque patterns. There were even a few (not sure what to call them) billowing waist-capes in prints and lace-patterns that would make really good curtains.
The Hair & Makeup: Fresh natural waves with a loose side-swept braid that was tucked behind one year – totally want to try that out tomorrow, by the way. Some models wore tinted visor shades and the makeup was barely there with a naked lip.
The Vibe: A reality show hot mess about to happen.
The Soundtrack: Barcelona discotheque.
The Front Row: Alexa Ray Joel, Angela Simmons, June Ambrose and daughter Summer Chamblain, America’s Next Top Model’s Jay Manuel, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA.
Celebrity We’d Like to See Wearing It: Um … Nicki Minaj? Sasha Baron Cohen in character?
WTF Moment: Oh, where to begin. The pre-game antics were more entertaining than the actual runway show. First drama: Angela Simmons sits down in Alexa Ray Joel’s seat and Joel bolts down over a couple of rows to claim it back. June Ambrose’s seven-year old daughter Summer – and her coif – are somehow caught in the melee. After the child screams out and fixes her mussed hair, all was fine. Well, until a well-scrubbed Euro-skinny suited man comes over to the packed front row repeatedly asking “is there a Miss Universe seat? Miss Universe?”. He finally comes across the assigned locale, some interlopers are ejected and he and his non-Miss Universe girlfriend plop into that spot – thereby relegating poor Summer to sit on the floor at her mother’s feet. Lesson learned: Fashion show front rows are not always child friendly.
What the Liner Notes Said: The new Spring/Summer 2013 collection by Custo Barcelona is about suggesting the signature colour and graphics through the filter of transparencies. Graphics in the collection were inspired by the oceanic landscape, the cosmos and the constellations.
