The Clothes: F-U-N. Oscar de la Renta covered his ladies who lunch (and political wives, like Ann Romney, who just wore one of his designs to deliver her RNC speech) and his twenty-something socialite party girls with this raucous spring collection.
The show opened with his classic waist-accentuating suits and day dresses adorned with lace and ruffles in vibrant combinations of black, red and yellow. Pink and yellow plaids? Yes, he went there. And what's more, there was latex mixed in with the lace. It came in red, fuchsia, turquoise and a pink described in the line sheets as "shocking pink"--perhaps a nod to recent Met Costume Institute subject Elsa Schiaparelli.
And then came the party dresses (and jumpsuits). The highlight of the show. The Man Repeller's Leandra Medine was crazy for look 49, a jumpsuit embroidered with beaded tassels (she literally yelled after the show "beaded jumpsuit!", while I couldn't get over Cara Delevingne looking like the fanciest Barbie doll evar in a shocking pink ostrich feather embroidered peplum bustier over "cocktail shorts." Yes, cocktail shorts are apparently a thing, to go right along with that no-pants trend Marc Jacobs started.
Oh, and one last highlight: Karlie Kloss opening and closing the show. No one else moves like her. As Medine said after the show, "It's Karlie Kloss's world and we're just living in it."
The Hair & Makeup: If you had any doubts that Oscar wanted to have fun with this collection and make it youthful, look no further than the hair--which was swept up into a classic French twist and then streaked with pink, yellow, and blue. When the hair is that dramatic, the makeup should be toned down, which it was. Lips were just slightly rosy.
The Soundtrack: Orchestral mixed with the Smashing Pumpkins.
The Vibe: Festive--and hot.
The Front Row: The Bush twins
Celebrity We'd Most Like to See Wearing this Collection: Various European princesses, including K-Midd!
WTF Moment: In the elevator up to the show, I found myself in the same car as Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington. Grace seemed surprised Anna had made it on. "I walk fast," she said. And after watching her BOOK IT post-Marc Jacobs, we can certainly attest to her speed walking skills.
