The Clothes: Peter Som long-ago established himself as one of the prints-masters at NYFW, and for Spring 2013 he definitely lived up to his reputation for bold and unexpected color combinations. The first look to come out on the runway consisted of roomy, to-the-knee shorts in a kind of abstract floral print, and textured sweater over a fully-buttoned crisp white collar that was embellished with glittery floral appliques--themes and silhouettes that ran throughout the collection. (On another note, what do we call these to-the-knee shorts? Shants? Are these a thing?). The show's palette started off with a handful of pretty pastel looks--dusty pinks, pale blues, and faded florals--before developing into a high-wattage mix of bold florals, quirky geometric prints, and finally culminated in brocade leopard print. It sounds like a lot to cram into a show but Som pulled it off with characteristic aplomb. Oh, and we really want those brocade leopard pants.
The Hair & Makeup: Like the clothes, the hair & makeup kind of had a rebellious teenaged school girl slant: Hair was streaked with multi-colored strands, but in an imperfect way that looked decidedly DIY. Each girl's makeup was slightly different but they all had one thing in common: mega-watt eyeshadow, whether it was bright orange or bright green. To top it all off, each girl wore a different colored mini veil, pinned over her face.
