Last night, Barack Obama won re-election--and we won four more years of gushing over and gawking at the picture perfect Obama family. As they laughed and hugged onstage to we couldn't help but look back on the night four years ago when Obama was first elected--and Michelle, Malia, and Sasha stole the hearts of fashion people everywhere.
In many ways, 2008's election night set the style standard for Michelle--and she's sticking with it four years later. Both nights MObama wore knee-length patterned frocks--though 2008's bold red-and-black Narciso Rodriguez was slightly more flashy and fashion-forward than last night's Michael Kors. Perhaps symbolically, the Narciso dress Michelle chose in 2008 was fresh off the runway--while last night's Kors frock is a few years old, and is one that Michelle has already worn on a few public occasions. Could Michelle have been communicating that sometimes it's better to stick with what you know best, that new isn't always better? Whatever the case, in both 2008 and 2012, Michelle toned down the frocks with black cardigans and understated heels.
Now let's talk about Malia and Sasha. In 2008, the Obama girls were still kids and were dressed appropriately as such: 10-year-old Malia wore a demure long-sleeve red dress, and seven-year-old Sasha was dressed in an adorable black frock. Both girls wore black leggings and ballet flats.
But in 2012, Malia and Sasha are beginning to look like the teen and pre-teen they are, respectively. In brightly-colored full skirts and covered-up, basic tops, the two have undoubtedly learned how to master the conservative-yet-stylish fashion sense for which their mother is famous for. We love that they kept the look fresh and young, with fun accessories: Malia with a bright pink belt, and Sasha with chunky necklaces.
Update: Sasha's skirt was by Chris Benz.
