A smiley face wearing a diamond party hat, a smiley face crying diamond tears, and a set of lips with a diamond beauty mark: These are all things you'll find in Alison Lou's debut jewelry collection.
Designed by recent Bard graduate and New York native Alison Chemla, the line successfully melds high end design with comparatively low brow inspiration. "I was inspired by emoticons," Chemla told us at last week's launch party for the collection. She expanded to include other playful themes, like messages (one bracelet has an eye, a heart and a "u"). It's all too adorable for words.
Judging by the party's attendees--Hannah Bronfman, Leandra Medine, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Harley Viera Newton--and look book model Jemima Kirke, "an old family friend" who could not attend because she just gave birth, Chemla's definitely surrounded by the right people.
Of course, having a successful jewelry line requires having more than just connections and Chemla does. Her industry experience includes internships with coveted jewelry lines House of Waris and CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nominee Finn Jewelry and she told us she'd been working on the line for over a year.
"There was one point where I was just kind of stuck and wasn't sure what to do next." She obviously figured it out. There's not a piece in this collection we wouldn't be delighted to wear and we have the feeling we're not alone. The collection ranges in price from $220 for a 14 karat gold earring to $7,040 for a necklace adorned with white diamonds and is currently available at NYC boutique FiveStory (which also happens to have been founded by a young NYC native).
