Though he's no doubt been busy prepping for today's Chanel Metiers d'Art show in Scotland, Lagerfeld apparently sent a statement via email to ModMods, the street style outpost of Metro. In it, Karl says, "Considering how hard it is to replace a man such as Nicolas Ghesquière, the best solution is to choose someone completely different." He argues that if PPR CEO François-Henri Pinault is trying to expand the business, then Wang is "the best man for the job" noting that "his fashion is easier, his personality is more open to the world and he has very good contacts."
"People ‘adore’ Alexander," Karl continues. "I too like him very much and I think he is a good choice in light of the fashion house’s future projects." Acccording to Karl, those future projects apparently include developing the brand "in parts of the world where fashion is most important as well as the luxury industry," in which Lagerfeld believes Wang's "origins will prove to be very helpful."
Chanel would neither confirm nor deny the email's veracity--a Chanel spokesperson said they do not comment on Karl Lagerfeld's statements (we wonder why)--however since Lagerfeld seems to be cozy with Metro, guest-editing the paper back in February, we figure this could be legit. Only we doubt Karl typed that email himself.
So sleep easy, Alex. Uncle Karl's got your back.
