Last night's party to celebrate the launch of Nanette Lepore's L'Amour collection--one of the many new designer lines included in JC Penney's revamp--was kind of like the best sweet sixteen ever. Held in the basement of the Hudson Hotel, slinkies hung from the ceiling near an Instagram wall, Alexandra Richards DJed, an old fashioned soda bar was made specially for the under-21 set only, and there were lockers filled with pieces from the collection. The message was loud and clear: L'Amour is for the coolest girls in school.
The inspiration for the line came from Lepore's 14-year-old daughter Violet. The designer says she's wanted to put out a juniors line for a long time, and the collaboration with JC Penney allows her to do that at the right price point--the entire line clocks in at under $50. She knew from day one she wanted Violet involved. "I really want to please her," Lepore said. "When I come home with things and she doesn't like them, it's like a dagger to my heart."
To that end, Nanette would bring fabric swatches and designs home for Violet's approval. Violet was on hand to chat about the line, which if the bright neons and fun patterns are any indication, is a perfect representation of her own style. "I've always grown up having a lot of fun with my clothing and always trying out new things," she explained.
Judging by the reaction from 13-year-old Shameless star Emma Kenney, they're headed in the right direction for their target audience. Kenney--who had a science test the next day and fangirled with us about One Direction--couldn't say enough good things about the line, giving the ultimate teen girl compliment: "It's so cool!"
And as other adult celeb guests Pretty Little Liars's Shay Mitchell and Spring Breakers's Vanessa Hudgens proved, there are probably going to be a lot of grown ups stealing L'Amour pieces from their younger sisters' closets.
