Many of us expected Anne Hathaway to wear Valentino to the Oscars, thanks to a press release sent out by Valentino prior to the ceremony. But then...she didn't.
Instead, the actress chose that pale pink Prada that's been seen from every angle at this point. We had heard that she ditched the Valentino because it was too similar to the McQueen gown that Amanda Seyfried, Hathaway's Les Miz co-star, was wearing. Well, today Hathaway released an official statement about the last minute switch, according to WWD:
It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans. Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused.
Hathaway very tactfully doesn't name names, and Prada wouldn't either. “It’s our policy never to comment and we can’t make any statements out of respect for our fellow designers,” the brand said in a statement to WWD. Rachel Zoe, Hathaway's stylist, was unavailable to comment.
While our source tells us it was Seyfried's dress that sparked the last minute change, WWD seems to think it was Jennifer Aniston's red Valentino dress. The trade wrote, "It wasn’t clear how news of the other dress came to Hathaway’s attention, but a good guess is that it was a source close to home: Jennifer Aniston, who is also repped by [Hathaway's rep Stephen] Huvane, wore a red strapless Valentino gown to the ceremony."
Whatever the reason was, we wouldn't be surprised to see Hathaway wearing heaps of Valentino for her next several events.
