Downtown goth princess Katie Gallagher presented a line that felt tailor-made to New York's impending blizzard at the Standard Friday morning. The theme was "The Winter Froze You Away," and the voluminous, raven and slate gray capes, wool knit thigh highs, and exaggerated "frostbite" skirts felt very warm indeed. Leather, laser-cut belts modeled off icicle formations cinched waists and thick, navy hoods covered slightly undone tresses.
The collection was in keeping with what we've come to expect from the young RISD grad: dark, architectural, and a little haunted. "The idea is to create lines that move into one another and disappear," said Gallagher in the show notes. The aggressive industrial soundtrack only enhanced the cold, underground tone of the clothes. We wouldn't be surprised to see one of Gallagher's pieces on a Rick Owens-devotee en-route to an Icelandic rave, or on a young Lower East Sider bracing the cold on the Bowery.
