There comes a point in some rappers' careers when they stop wearing pink polos and backpacks and start wearing Givenchy skirts, at the risk of losing some fans.
Kanye West reached this milestone in 2011, when he first began wearing kilts, and he continued to do so throughout his Watch the Throne tour with Jay-Z. His new Givenchy performance uniform gained the most attention when he wore a leather skirt to perform at last year's 12/12/12 concert for Sandy relief. Everyone made a really big deal out of it. Someone made a "Kanye's Skirt" Twitter, etc.
We thought Kim Kardashian's boyfriend would have brushed it off, but apparently a couple of criticisms have gotten to him. In February, the skirt came under fire from rapper Lord Jamar, who lyricized, in a song called "Lift Up Your Skirt,"
He introduced the skinny jeans to the rap scene Then he wore a f***ing skirt on a video screen Then he wore it again at a memorial I can't pretend that this s**t ain't deplorable
Afterwards, according to the Telegraph, Kanye reportedly asked Getty to take down photos of him wearing the skirt. We searched Getty and found that at least some of Kanye's skirt outfits are missing from the photo agency's archives. The photo of him performing in a skirt at the Sandy Relief concert, for instance, can no longer be found on Getty.
In a move that made us even more sad (and highlighted how amazingly ridiculous and narcissistic Kanye West is), West spent four minutes talking to a Hot97 host yesterday about how MTV gave him the lowly ranking of 7th-best MC in the world because of his Givenchy kilts--and his girlfriend. He explains (via Vulture),
What happens with these type of judges and people who are viewers, when you come in, I had the pink polo and the backpack, then I’m checking all the boxes for that Tribe Called Quest–era and J Dilla and all that, so they champion it. They don’t like Givenchy-Kanye. They don’t like Kanye in a kilt. They don’t like Kanye in a relationship.
So now comes the time when Kanye has to decide what he cares about more: Being one of the top five MCs in the world, or fashion.
Given the Margiela mask and straitjacket he wore on stage recently and those rumors he's reviving his clothing line in Paris, he certainly hasn't given up the latter. But, has he given up kilts? We wouldn't be surprised. Even Marc Jacobs seems to have moved on from kilts to pajamas. Are fashion kilts officially a thing of the past?
