The CFDA and eBay are taking on design piracy again with their third You Can't Fake Fashion campaign. They've tapped a whopping 90 American designers including Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, Band of Outsiders, Prabal Gurung and more to each design a one-of-a-kind tote bag to go up for auction on eBay to benefit the CFDA's anti-counterfeiting efforts.
The idea is to educate shoppers and reinforce the importance of original design over fakes and copies until designers are provided more legal and permanent intellectual property protection.
Whether the perpetrator is a counterfeit handbag ring based in China, a high street store or a big name designer, there's no question that original design needs to be protected, especially that of up-and-coming designers, many of whom designed some really cute bags for this campaign.
We got to see them up close last night at new Bowery hotspot Finale at the launch party for the collaboration, where Steven Kolb and designers like Michelle Ochs, Carly Cushnie, Pamela Love, and Tracy Reese all came out to peruse each other's bags, get customized chocolate purses and drink cleverly named cocktails like "The Original."
The auction began yesterday morning with each tote starting at $100. There's also a standard CFDA+eBay tote available to "Buy it Now" for $50.
