Before they gather together at the June 3 CFDA Award ceremony, the nine 2013 CFDA Swarovski Award Nominees partied last night at New York boutique Fivestory to celebrate their noms and unveil one of a kind works of art.
All of the nominees have had busy years full of collaborations and industry recognition--and unexpected celebrity attention, in the case of Suno.
"It was the dress that was seen around the world!" Suno's Erin Beatty said of their design that Lindsay Lohan wore for her pre-rehab appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. (To be clear, she bought it--Suno did not lend it to her.)
"She cried, she broke down, she had a fatherly moment with Letterman--it was great!"
Luckily, the designers weren't too busy to whip up unique Objets d'Art using Swarovski crystals. Sales of the sparkly goods benefited Free Arts NYC, and ranged from the conceptual (Suno sequined up a cactus) to the useful (Cushnie et Ochs sexed up a set of knives).
Irene Neuwirth looked a bit closer to home. "Well, it's my dog on an iPad cover," she said of her design with a laugh.
"It's really embarrassing. We did our entire lookbook with him last season and draped tons of jewelry on him," she continued. "I feel like I'm one second away from PETA contacting me, but I think it was fun to do something playful."
Even menswear designers got in on the fun. Todd Snyder had never worked with Swarovski crystals before, but after scattering them on a pair of New Balance sneakers, he says he's inspired to do more.
"I actually think we're going to do something with the sneakers!" he told me. "I think we're going to do a small run of them, and do women's as well, especially since I never get a chance to do women's wear that much, so it's kind of fun." [Ed. note: Yes, please! These look awesome.]
Overall, it was a great night of celebration for the designers, who all expressed gratitude for being nominated.
"I was just coming off the heels of the Vogue Fashion Fund, which was such an incredible experience," jewelry nominee Jennifer Meyer confessed. "To get this [nomination] is beyond icing on the cake."
And while many of the designers said they weren't ready for the CFDA Awards ceremony just yet, at least one designer duo has plans. "We're bringing the other Karlie, Karlie Kloss," Michelle Ochs said of Cushnie et Ochs's CFDA date.
"It'll be a Karlie sandwich!"
