The fashion world spends a lot of time fawning over the FLOTUS and her gorgeous sartorial choices. But this morning, it's another Obama whose fashion prowess has our undivided attention: Barack, or 'Barry,' as he was known prior to being elected the leader of the free world.
Yes, TIME managed to dig up President Obama's senior prom photos from way back in 1979. (Last year, Ellen DeGeneres got her hands on Michelle's, which were equally as incredible.) So let's break down Barry's "lewk" shall we?
Let's start with the white sport coat--a departure from the traditional black tux, or even the brown sport coat his bestie Greg is wearing. Obama stands out even in high school. It's also a hopeful color, much like the messaging in his first campaign. (Too much of a stretch? Yeah we know.) Add to that a navy dress shirt and a light blue printed tie--adventurous color combo! And note that the tie matches his date's dress. So thoughtful. All in all it's a very relaxed look, capped off by that radiant smile. We'll put it this way: Barry definitely got lei'd that night (I mean, this was Hawaii in the '70s, after all).
TIME also uncovered a pretty epic (and incredibly well scribed) yearbook note from the then-future POTUS to his best friend's prom date, in which he asks her out to lunch and describes her as "extremely sweet and foxy." Based on these photos, we wouldn't be surprised if the feelings were mutual.
Click through to see Barry's yearbook note, which shockingly doesn't begin with "Hey wuz ^? N2mh!" like all of mine did. He did, however sign off with a ♥. An early emoticon adopter. Aw.
