Turns out Kate Upton is not "furious" about Victoria's Secret reusing an image of her from 2011--without so much as a heads-up--in its recent catalog, as a source claimed yesterday. But she's not exactly jumping for joy either.
“The quote was wrong [in the Post]...[Kate is] not furious," a spokesperson who is "familiar with Upton’s business practices" told WWD.
"She’s just not thrilled about it, and the reason is she’s not contracted to work with Victoria’s Secret."
In other words, she's not getting paid, and doesn't even have a relationship with the retailer.
"The way it unraveled so quickly left a bad taste in her mouth," the spokesperson said.
WWD notes it's not uncommon for a brand to do a “buyout” of images, allowing them unlimited use. Basically, if Victoria's Secret owns the rights to the images (which, they probably do) they can stamp them on anything they want. But would they have wanted to use Upton's image if she hadn't recently shot to stardom to fame? Probably not. Putting her image on the back of the catalog seems like a publicity ploy--and hey, it worked!
But even as it capitalizes on her fame, Victoria's Secret still doesn't want to work with Upton. “As of right now, it’s untrue. She has no plans to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel," the spokesperson said. "As far as I know, there are no discussions."
What's a girl gotta do to get some wings around here?
