It’s summer! And that means on Fridays, everyone should be sneaking out of work a little bit early to go on a weekend jaunt or grab a drink on a sunny rooftop. The fashion industry, which works very hard, also knows a thing or two about how to cut loose. In our weekly Summer Friday column, we catch up with industry insiders to find out what they do, where they go, and what they bring with them when they escape the daily grind. Last week we went on two separate adventures with the Shipley & Halmos boys. This week we go on vacation with the executive editor at Harper's Bazaar, Laura Brown.
Hilarious, whip-smart, savvy, stylish: if there ever was an editor who had the entire package it would have to be Laura Brown. The breezy blonde from Down Under is the executive editor at Harper’s Bazaar and also the host of the chic online series, The Look, in which she interviews different celebrities, often in the unlikeliest of settings. From doing makeup alongside Kim Kardashian, hiking in L.A. with Ashley Greene, to riding in the backseat of a Rolls-Royce with Gabourey Sidibe, her online show, The Look, has become a huge hit.
When she’s not interviewing tastemakers or making decisions for one of the biggest fashion magazines in the world, Brown takes a little time out for herself on vacation where she does what normal people do, like get arrested while backpacking in Italy. Below she shares her favorite moments while on vacay, her must-have while there, and more.
What's your packing style? Last minute, and with more shoes than days.
Is it okay to look like a tourist on vacation? I have a congenital fear of ever looking like a tourist. Even when I am one.
What's the most daring thing you've done while abroad? Got arrested in Italy while backpacking. It wasn't my idea.
What's the one vacation moment you'll never forget? So many. From the cliffs of Cinque Terre in Italy, to the blue of Parrot Cay, to going home to Bondi Beach.
What's favorite purchase while on vacay? Rosé. (Which is also my favorite purchase at home.)
What's the sexiest thing about summer? The peace.
What's your new song of the summer? The less noise, the better.
What are your 5-7 packing essentials? Lots of Isabel Marant. The shirts are so easy to travel with. As many printed dresses as I can fit: Isabel, old Tracy Feith, Ann Taylor does some great flowy things. Missoni hat. Zimmermann and Eres swimsuits. iPad—because a vacation isn't real if you don't Instagram it.
