Adam Selman, Rihanna's costume designer and the brains behind the pop star's multiple collabs for British high street brand River Island, is set to debut his first eponymous Spring 2014 collection at New York fashion week.
(...Wait, you didn't think Rihanna actually designed those River Island collaborations all by herself, did you? Oh, you did? That's so sweet!)
Selman, who was responsible for Rihanna's barely-there bejeweled Carnival bikini, amongst other things, has been outfitting the pop star for the past two years. He studied design at Pratt, and initially got the hot-commodity gig through his boyfriend (and Rih-Rih's stylist), Mel Ottenberg.
But don't expect any bedazzled boobs in his own collection: According to WWD (which got a sneak preview of Selman's stuff), the line includes "a swim component, worked in a wearable way, along with soft lingerie and athletic references." "It’s sexy. It’s that fantasy woman but it’s also sporty,” says Selman, who took inspiration from a 1981 HBO special on supermodels called Beautiful Baby, Beautiful and 1970s Cosmo covers.
Selman's hope is that his September 5 presentation will lead to retail potential, telling WWD that Net-a-Porter, Barneys New York, and Opening Ceremony are all on his radar. Seeing as Opening Ceremony's already technically carried his designs, we're betting at least one of those goals will be met.
