Season after season, designers Max and Lubov Azria find themselves faced with the challenge of updating those iconic Hever Leger bandage dresses without straying too far from the brand (and upsetting those die-hard Herve Leger fangirls). In February, we saw the Herve Leger girl gain street smarts. This time around, she's got a sporty vibe--as influenced by Ms. Azria, herself. "I've been training for a marathon happening in April so this was a natural fit for me," she told us backstage.
The super sexy collection kicked off with printed jersey separates: long-sleeve tops mixed with multi-zipper skirts, racerback tanks with bandage multi-zipper peplum skirts. We were a bit puzzled by the playsuits--bandaged two-piece ensembles that were too dressy (and zippered) to be swimsuits, but too revealing for ready-to-wear.
Zippers took on a starring role for Herve Leger spring, finding their way onto dresses, skirts, leather peplum belts, and corsets. The theme worked on many items but fell flat on others. The over-embellished theme continued through to several dresses beaded with gold studs--it was all just too much. Heavy metal aside, there were strong ensembles in the collection. A bandage bandeau swimsuit was sexy and cool. Printed t-shirts that resembling bandanas felt very of-the-moment and relevant to the downtown crowd. And the shoes--leather ankle-strap pumps--were nothing short of exceptional.
