You always expect sportswear at New York Fashion Week--and there was plenty on offer this season. But some of those sportier elements--mesh, tracksuits, and bombers--have jumped across the pond to London and Milan, though they're not popping up in the way you'd expect them to. One needs to look no further than Prada for knee-high athletic tube socks (we're not sure how the bejewelled version would do on the field, though), Gucci for glamorous basketball shorts (it's possible!), or Antonio Marras for a chic mesh jacket, for evidence of the trend.

The words "timeless" and "elegant" were being thrown around a lot in Milan, especially the first few days of the collections. And we admit that when we think of Milan, home of Versace and Roberto Cavalli, those aren't the immediate words that come to mind. Until now.
Trendspotting: Floral and Plaid
With the '90s being the decade of inspiration du jour for designers in spring 2014, one comes to expect some typical '90s staples. Case in point, Birkenstocks, overalls, and the slip dress, but what would the '90s be without florals and plaid? Paired together, they are showing up on the runways and thankfully not always in the typical grungy fashion.
