Zang Toi, a favorite of the Real Housewives set, definitely knows his audience. From smart suits to jackets that cinched gently at the waist, and of course, evening gowns, there was plenty on offer for the drama-loving reality TV stars, many of whom sat front row at the show, to wear next season.
For spring 2014, Toi was inspired by ballerinas: A half-naked male dancer opened the show, dramatically jumping from stage left, then right, showing off his perfect pliés. The brief performance was followed by a tulle ball gown with shoulder details in purple and maroon--which felt a tad too dark and heavy for spring.
Other looks included smart and functional wide-legged trousers and outerwear, both short and long, with a beautiful midnight blue print on the back. The print was translated into the lining of the coats and capes as well. The collection's one misstep, in my opinion, came in the form of a Pepto Bismol-pink coat, worn over a blouse and dark trousers--the color was ill-advised, and the styling, questionable at best.
But Toi had returned to his old tricks by the show's closer: dreamy, dramatic gowns that came in mermaid styles with tulle bottoms and floral appliqué detailing. One blue gown was worn with a scintillating bolero, which draped like a cowl from behind. It was all very Miami Housewife. Which, to Toi, of course, is the whole point.
