It was very cool and very French in Los Angeles on Thursday night at the one year celebration of Isabel Marant's boutique on leafy, intimate Melrose Place in West Hollywood. Guests including Liberty Ross, Julie Delpy, Alessandra Ambrosio, Dakota Johnson, Vincent Gallo, and Beck wafted through the boutique’s gorgeous outdoor–indoor space, which feels more like a French cottage with a lush front garden than a retail store.
The celebration was hosted by the designer and frequent Marant model Milla Jovovich, who told us “when I first shot with Isabel in 2009, I told her when she opened in Los Angeles, it had to be on Melrose Place.” Jovovich was true to Marant’s high-low aesthetic, impeccably pairing the designer with a Lucky Brand tank.
Other guests layered their best Marant pieces to try to keep warm on the unseasonably cold L.A. night. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was absurdly flawless in Marant “head-to-toe,” describing the designer as “perfect for the on-the-go girl [because] you can mix her [pieces] with high fashion or high street.”
Actress Joy Bryant wore a breathtaking Marant leather-wrapped skirt she bought in Paris as a model in the 1990s. “Isabel has always been a trendsetter,” Bryant said. “Her sneakers are so dope and everyone has been knocking them off, but even before that, she has been setting trends and just being really consistent in her vision.”
Singer Jenny Lewis told us that while thrift shops are her main source of fashion inspiration, she tries to supplement her wardrobe “with really beautiful” Marant pieces because she finds the designer “really accessible.” Because there was kind of no way we could not, we asked Lewis if she agreed with the adage “too many accessories ruin an outfit,” which we first learned from 1989’s cult classic Troop Beverly Hills, which Lewis starred in as a child. She gamely told us: “there can never be too many accessories.”
Like the best hostess, Marant floated around the party throughout the night, seemingly hugging and kissing everyone. When we finally caught up with her, she told us she spends most of her time as “a working beast in Paris,” currently working on her Fall 2014 collection and a sunglasses collaboration with Oliver Peoples for the Spring/Summer collection, which she calls “very L.A.”
