How Many Crystals Does It Take to Put on a Matthew Williamson Show?
When Coco Rocha, Leigh Lezark and Lady Mary Charteris (sporting silver eyebrows) are bopping along to dance music in a grand hall with enormous chandeliers, it’s safe to say you’re at a Matthew Williamson show.
Effectively, it was crystal mania. Crystals on everything. Crystals on polo-neck mohair sweaters, crystals on skirts, crystals on leggings, crystals on leather pants. Even a red mohair dress was not complete without huge, star-shaped sequins sewn down the front.
It all felt a bit "party like it's 1999" until the furs showed up. Fluffy Mongolian sheep's wool coats came in shades of blue and red, paired with (yet more!) crystal-studded sunglasses. The glam rock turn was a welcome change from Williamson's well-known, tight-fitting minidresses, and worked perfectly with the silver glitter ankle boots by Bionda Castana. There were some full-length sequin dresses (best described as Ziggy Stardust on acid), a striking ostrich feather gown, and then the chainmail came out. Silver chainmail minidresses with – you guessed it – crystals piled high, and even a chainmail bandana around the neck for good measure. Overheard upon exit? “I bet Shoshanna would totally wear that metal bandana....”
