Oscar de la Renta Fall 2014 Is as Gorgeous as Ever

At 81, the designer continues to deliver stunning collections.

What can one say about an Oscar de la Renta collection? At 81, the designer is a master of his craft, and he knows what his customers want every season: pretty and expensive-looking dresses, coats and skirt suits, in different colors but not dramatically different silhouettes.

That's not to say that De la Renta is impervious to trends. When other designers were doing peplums a few seasons ago, so was he; and this season, we saw an opening set of wool suits in a charcoal pinstripe not unlike the pinstripes Stella McCartney showed for fall 2013 or Dion Lee showed at Milk Studios last week. Also on trend: a belted shearling jacket, and plenty of chunky, oversized sweaters. De la Renta also experimented with transparency, particularly in his dresses, more than usual.

We were especially fond of a gray houndstooth skirt suit with a burgundy lace overlay; a set of three columnar dresses with metal fringe that jangled with the models' steps and, as always, the gowns, particularly a strapless, black and cobalt floral one shown second to last in the show.
