Options are growing for young designers the world over looking for help financing their fledgling businesses. One of those options is the newly-formed LVMH Prize, which will bestow one designer a €300,000 ($418,530 at current exchange) grant and a year of mentoring. Almost exactly a month ago, LVMH and its large panel of industry experts including Bernard Arnault, Linda Fargo and Patrick Demarchelier, narrowed applicants down to a shortlist of 30. But things got more cutthroat Thursday when it announced the 12 finalists.
There are some familiar names among the final 12, including Hood by Air and Tim Coppens, both of whom were recently nominated for CFDA Swarovski awards (which also include cash prizes), and fellow New Yorkers Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis of Suno, who won a CFDA Swarovski award in 2013. Other finalists come from London, Paris, Russia, Milan and even India.
Among those cut? Creatures of the Wind, Meadham Kirchoff and Ostwald Helgason. Better luck next time, guys.
Next, the finalists will travel to Paris on May 28 to present to members of the jury, which includes Karl Lagerfeld, Nicolas Ghesquiere, Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo and others. We're sure they're not nervous at all. See the full list of finalists below.
