Taylor Swift must be freaking out so hard right now.
Lorde, the 17-year-old wunkerkind from Down Under (Aukland, New Zealand, to be precise) just scored her very first mainstream American fashion mag cover: May's issue of Teen Vogue, a magazine she was pretty much destined to cover if you ask us.
Her beauty look in the cover shoot, applied by Benjamin Puckey, is a lot softer than we're used to seeing from the girl with an affinity for inky lips and dip-dyed finger tips. (And if you're thinking the cover looks a little autumnal for a spring issue, it's probably because she's wearing a plaid top from Marc by Marc Jacob's fall 2014 collection. Maybe they're on NZ time?)
The singer touched on her signature gothic-tinged style in the cover story: "There are a lot of expectations in this industry about looking a certain way and having a certain kind of appeal," she tells Andrew Bevan. "I am feminine, but I really love dressing in boys' clothes too. I guess that's why I get labeled as 'the grumpy girl,' because I don't play into that." Do you, Lorde. Do you.
In that same vein, it'll be interesting to see whether the singer will take issue with the amount of airbrushing that's been done to her skin on the cover -- something she's openly condemned in the past via Twitter.
In other Lorde beauty news that should make her fans very, very un-grumpy, the "Royals" singer debuted a purple-y lipstick color from her upcoming MAC collaboration this past Saturday during her Coachella performance -- just enough to tide us over until the collection drops this June.
