Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube -- a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than 5 million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.
If I could wear my hair in an updo every day, I might. Having my hair up -- and I don't mean in a messy bun -- always makes me feel a little more elegant and hold myself a little straighter. It's also an occasion to bring out a favorite pair of statement earrings. (I've been collecting vintage Miriam Haskell and Juliana pieces since I was 19, and quite a few contemporary pieces in the years since.)
That's why I was so pleased to discover an updo tutorial that I could wear not just on special occasions, or when I had an hour to dedicate to my hair, but every day. It really only takes three to five minutes -- make a loose ponytail, tuck the ends in, pin and spray -- and is great for a bit of everyday glamour.
You can learn how to do it in the video above, and see my messy, running-out-the-door version below. If you decide to try it yourself, I recommend doing it on a morning you haven't washed your hair, so you have a bit more hold. I also prefer to part my hair down the center rather than on the side, as the video shows. Make sure your elastic is tight and you have a good, strong hairspray -- Big Sexy Hair's "Intense Hold" hairspray is my go-to.
