I have not seen Disney's "Maleficent" yet, but I can already tell you it was extremely well cast, because Elle Fanning has always reminded me of a princess, and Angelina Jolie has always had a bit of a Disney villain vibe. (In a good way! It's that dark, mysterious thing, ya know?)
That said, I've become even more convinced that the casting was on point during the press tour for the film, because both actresses consistently wore things that reflected their characters -- for Fanning, who plays Princess Aurora, that's been princess-y, largely pastel-colored dresses, while Jolie has donned a fair number of dark gowns and edgy accessories reflecting her title role as Maleficent.
Dressing on-theme was a risky decision on the part of the actresses and their stylists (and probably Disney). But with Fanning and Jolie, the looks worked because they didn't really stray too far from the stars' usual styles. It also added an element of fun and whimsy that is often lacking from these sorts of red carpet events. From custom shoes to weapon-like jewelry, read on for the best instances of their theme-y styling, which culminated in some pretty OTT looks at Wednesday night's L.A. premiere.
Fanning and Jolie started out the tour with solid, unfussy, informal attire. They also held hands to clarify that Angelina Jolie is not, in fact, evil.
The footwear is where they got creative. Jolie wore a pair of custom Christian Louboutin shoes inspired by Maleficent's horns. Fanning chose a pair of Charlotte Olympia's Sleeping Beauty shoes. It would have been a crime if she hadn't worn these, honestly.
Jolie's first gown of the press tour -- by Versace -- was long, black and very evil sorceress-y in every way. I'm scared.
And here's Elle, a ray of sunshine in a princess-like gown by Georges Hobeika and a princess-like wreath 'round her princess-like hair.
A close-up of the wreath (and questionable pink eyeshadow).
Below, Fanning's fitted bodice and ruffled skirt are undeniably princess-like. Meanwhile, Jolie channeled Maleficent in clever way, pairing a Versace dress adorned with creepy ravens with yet another pair of custom Louboutins, these ones with blood dripping down the back (see below).
For her most terrifying look yet, Jolie chose a "rubberized silk" Atelier Versace gown, which she paired with frightening spiked cuffs and a very dramatic earring. The jewelry is by Stella McCartney, who we didn't realize had such a dangerous aesthetic when it came to jewelry.
A closer look at the accessories.
And here came Elle Fanning in her most Princess Aurora-like gown to date, this one by Elie Saab. It was blue and off-the-shoulder (just like Princess Aurora) and was paired with a shiny choker (just like that sleeping beauty). A sight to behold.
Even her vintage-looking accessories probably once belonged to a princess. And her matching icy blue nails! I just can't.
And they lived happily ever after.
