The increasing popularity of athletic-inspired apparel and accessories has been hard to ignore this spring. Silk baseball jackets have subbed in for leather motos, white Adidas sneakers replaced chunky heeled booties. The change was not only painless, but comfortable — that being the whole point of sportswear in the first place. Though, style certainly plays a part.
Then there's the baseball hat. Call it sportswear for advanced fashion people. Judging by their ubiquity in street style photos, J.Crew style guides and support from folks like Cara Delevingne, whose predilection for a statement topper is a well-documented phenomenon, baseball hats should be happening all over the place right now. But they're not. They're easy to pull off at the beach or at Yankee Stadium; but they're a bit more difficult to make work for brunch or on the way to work.
Well, we like a challenge. Here are five looks that prove that, yep, it is possible to wear that cap in normal life.
The Downtown Girl
Some people might ask you if that is a lobster on your hat. Ignore them. It is a scorpion, and the hat is Rodarte. Embrace the weird with some Birkenstock-esque sandals and a glittery plastic clutch while keeping the silhouette streamlined. The result is pretty damn cool.
Rodarte scorpion hat, $195, available at Shopbop. Kate Spade stud earrings, $39, available at Shopbop. Zara printed dress, $119, available at Zara. Sam Edelman Adora cross strap sandals, $110, available at Shopbop. Nars bronzing powder in Laguna, $36, available at Sephora. 202 Factory glitter clutch, $65, available at Opening Ceremony.
If you're anything like us, you want to keep things light, breezy and pared-down when summer starts heating up. With its bands of neutral-toned swatches, this Acne hat is a nice complement to a simple cotton crop top and wide-legged pant. Add some texture in the form of buttery leather sandals and a tote bag, and you're ready to go (to the park, to brunch, etc. etc.). Beauty note: A polished brow and a pop of red on your nails is a winner here.
Acne Studios cap, $130, available at Net-a-Porter. Apiece Apart bi-level top, $275, available at La Garconne. Rachel Comey Wayward pant, $380, available at La Garconne. Clinique brow pencil, $16, available at Sephora. Essie nail polish in Really Red, $8.50, available at Ulta. Jennifer Meyer bar ring, $119, available at Shopbop. Marni crisscross sandals, $365, available at Barneys. Madewell Transport tote, $168, available at Shopbop.
The Tough Girl
Florals and leather — in this case the black leather cap we've been seeing so much of lately — go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Start with a girly dress and pile on the hardware and leather to your heart's desire. Maybe throw a pretty cheek stain in there for good measure.
Leather baseball cap, $28, available at GoJane. Pamela Love five spike earrings, $210, available at Lyst. Tarte cheek stain in Fearless, $30, available at Sephora. Kate Moss for Topshop floral dress, $150, available at Net-a-Porter. Ash Jungle slip-on sneaker, $170, available at Shopbop. Surface to Air embroidered bomber jacket, $500, available at Farfetch.
Just because you're wearing a baseball hat does not mean you have to look like a soccer mom. Instead, think, "What Would Eva Chen Do?" The print of this silky hat steps things up a notch, so keep the vibe ladylike with cropped white jeans, neutral, polished accessories and a pop of bright lipstick.
J.Crew cap, $29.99, available at J.Crew. Frame Denim midrise boyfriend jeans, $200, available at Net-a-Porter. Zara detailed knit sweater, $25.90, available at Zara. Nars velvet lip gloss pencil in Happy Days, $25, available at Sephora. Etienne Aigner Small Chapter Clutch, $295, available at Etienne Aigner. Adia Kibur crystal necklace, $80, available at Shopbop. Adia Kibur layered chain bracelet, $50, available at Shopbop.
Of all the ways to style a baseball hat, this is the most seamless, simply because it's the most casual. Overalls, muscle tee and sneakers? Check, check and check. Bonus points for throwing that hat on backwards, or being a model off duty.
Stampd hat, $68, available at Revolve. NSF "Buddy" overalls, $429, available at Farfetch. T by Alexander Wang classic muscle tee, $79, available at MyTheresa. Adidas for Topshop sneakers, $100, available at Topshop. Whistles bracelet, $38, available at Asos. Hershel backpack, $59.95, available at Tactics. Skool Ov Jenius by Lovebullets ring, $34, available at Asos.
