5 Ways to Wear a Baseball Hat This Summer

Yes, you can rock a classic cap as a grown-ass woman.

The increasing popularity of athletic-inspired apparel and accessories has been hard to ignore this spring. Silk baseball jackets have subbed in for leather motos, white Adidas sneakers replaced chunky heeled booties. The change was not only painless, but comfortable — that being the whole point of sportswear in the first place. Though, style certainly plays a part.

Then there's the baseball hat. Call it sportswear for advanced fashion people. Judging by their ubiquity in street style photos, J.Crew style guides and support from folks like Cara Delevingne, whose predilection for a statement topper is a well-documented phenomenon, baseball hats should be happening all over the place right now. But they're not. They're easy to pull off at the beach or at Yankee Stadium; but they're a bit more difficult to make work for brunch or on the way to work.

Well, we like a challenge. Here are five looks that prove that, yep, it is possible to wear that cap in normal life.

The Downtown Girl

Some people might ask you if that is a lobster on your hat. Ignore them. It is a scorpion, and the hat is Rodarte. Embrace the weird with some Birkenstock-esque sandals and a glittery plastic clutch while keeping the silhouette streamlined. The result is pretty damn cool.

Rodarte scorpion hat, $195, available at Shopbop. Kate Spade stud earrings, $39, available at Shopbop. Zara printed dress, $119, available at Zara. Sam Edelman Adora cross strap sandals, $110, available at Shopbop. Nars bronzing powder in Laguna, $36, available at Sephora. 202 Factory glitter clutch, $65, available at Opening Ceremony.

The Minimalist

If you're anything like us, you want to keep things light, breezy and pared-down when summer starts heating up. With its bands of neutral-toned swatches, this Acne hat is a nice complement to a simple cotton crop top and wide-legged pant. Add some texture in the form of buttery leather sandals and a tote bag, and you're ready to go (to the park, to brunch, etc. etc.). Beauty note: A polished brow and a pop of red on your nails is a winner here.
