When we found out that fashion darling Sofia Coppola — the filmmaker behind some of the industry's biggest cult classics like "The Virgin Suicides," "Somewhere" and "Marie Antoinette" was doing a live-action adaptation of "The Little Mermaid," we knew we could expect some pretty young things to join the cast very early on. While rumors have swirled that Emma Watson (who starred in Coppola's "The Bling Ring") would play Ariel, nothing official had been announced -- until now.
According to IMDB, androgynous model Andrej Pejic is one of the very first actors to be cast in the film, playing the (vaguely titled) character "Sister #4," which we're presuming to be one of Ariel's beautiful siblings. We've reached out to Pejic for comment and will update as more details develop.
Pejic has dabbled in acting a couple of times before — having appeared in a David Bowie video and a Turkish TV series — and has aspirations to be more than just a model -- so we can't wait to see the rest of the project come together.
This also won't be the first time that Coppola features a high-fashion model in one of her films (Erin Wasson, Maryna Linchuk and Angela Lindvall all have cameos in "Somewhere"). Our fingers are crossed that some more of our favorite catwalkers might trade in their heels for mermaid tails in the movie. Stay tuned.
