'Self' Hires New Fashion Director

The glossy's latest member hints at a more fashion-friendly tone.

Joyce Chang continues to put together her dream team at Self magazine, where she was appointed editor in chief in May. It's the latest Conde Nast title to go through the Anna Wintour-approved revamp other magazines like Lucky and Glamour have already experienced.

A spokesperson for Self confirms that Chang's latest hire is Melissa Ventosa Martin, who replaces Evyan Metzner as  fashion director of the glossy. Metzner was let go by Chang in May after 10 years with the magazine.

Ventosa Martin joins the team from sister publication Glamour, where she has served as style director since 2010; previously, she worked at T, The New York Times Style Magazine as its fashion market director and fashion editor.

Chang indicates to WWD that the hire means Self will be taking fashion more seriously. "I want fashion to feel very much part of a reader’s life, which it is," she says. "We want to elevate Self in the content and in the tone."
