Just a few years ago, somewhere between fall 2008 and spring 2009, Balmainia seemed to hit a fever pitch. Christophe Decarnin's designs for the French label were among the most copied and lusted-after items off the runway -- from the sexy minidresses and sharp-shouldered jackets to the coveted boots and leather pants, editors, models and celebrities alike couldn't get enough of the label. It was literally unavoidable.
Now, it looks like Olivier Rouesting has hit his stride at the house, and Balmain is back in the spotlight. At the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday, a few of the most fashion-y guests — Jourdan Dunn, Kim Kardashian, Joan Smalls and Chanel Iman — walked the red carpet in looks by the brand. Rouesting has slowly but surely built himself a dedicated following of famous people. Chief among them are Rihanna, who starred in his spring 2014 ad campaign, and Mrs. Kardashian West, whom he dressed for a number of events surrounding her wedding to Kanye. Rouesting also posts his frequent glamorous rendezvous with industry insiders and celebs on his Instagram account (which currently has over 455,000 followers), proving that he's become quite the man about town.
Will Balmania 2.0 sweep the coming awards season? We'll be watching. At the very least, we expect to see plenty of Balmain-inspired fall garb at our local fast fashion retailers in no time.
