MTV has recently begun to capitalize on the popularity of '90s and early '00s nostalgia by regularly showing blocks of "retro" programming like "Laguna Beach" and "Daria" -- it even revived "House of Style." This #TBT spirit somehow ended up translating onto the red carpet at Sunday night's Video Music Awards. Watching the arrivals gave us déjà vu more than once...
Katy Perry and her date Riff Raff — a rapper who's signed to her rumored boyfriend Diplo's record label — stepped out of their car in matching custom Versace outfits made from head-to-toe denim.
As you probably recall, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake wore a very similar couples ensemble at the 2001 American Music Awards. Perry and Riff Raff were going for the "best worst dressed" couple of the night, and we'd say they nailed it.
Another throwback came in the form of Amber Rose's chain dress, that left very little to the imagination — much like Rose McGowan's barely-there look from the 1998 VMAs, which she attended with her then-boyfriend Marilyn Manson.
However, the throwbacks did not end there: Charli XCX channeled Cher Horowitz in a "Clueless"-inspired performance outfit; there were so many men dressed in head-to-toe white that we thought we were watching a Backstreet Boys video and Nicki Minaj's ass-centric performance of "Anaconda" brought us right back to the 2001 VMAs, where Britney Spears danced on stage holding a real live snake while performing "I'm A Slave 4 U" in a tiny green two-piece that looked very much like Minaj's.
While we all got a good laugh and love some nostalgia, we're thinking some of these fashion moments should've been left in the past. Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
