Lately, the red carpet has felt like a sea of loose waves and updos artfully mussed with escaping curls. Meanwhile, street style favors the outright rumpled, with texturized "French girl" bedhead reigning supreme.
Friends, those days are gone.
Or at least they were at the MTV VMAs on Sunday night. Usually you see one or two stars rocking straight locks at an awards show (often it's Sandra Bullock), but the event saw a whole host of musicians, models and young famouses whose names we will never fully learn choosing a pin-straight look. Flat ironed hair was more ubiquitous than we've seen in a long time, so we're calling trend on this one.
The tucked-behind-the-ear, middle-parted version got a lot of love from ladies like Kendall Jenner, Jordin Sparks and Jessie J. More polished than Ali MacGraw's iconic rendering and less flat than Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi-era style, this look is sophisticated, particularly when paired with natural makeup.
Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora both took the brushed back route, while Jourdan Dunn served up some excellent Posh Spice with an angled bob. Laverne Cox and Jennifer Lopez showed off fantastic highlight jobs with their sleek locks. Given that nobody looked better than J.Lo last night, it might be time to dust off the ol' flat iron once again.
