I am a flats-wearing girl for all occasions – work, dinner, dates, fashion weeks in February. I simply value mobility too much to bother with heels; I also feel awkwardly slow and overdone every time I wear them.
And yet every August, a few weeks before New York Fashion Week lands like a pack of hounds, I toy with the idea of a pair of heels: Something to lend my look a little fashion edge, with a powerful (and practical!) block heel.
In my browsing, I came across these navy leather platform sandals from Zara, which totally fit the bill: They're tall, attractive and, for heels, relatively comfortable to walk in. They would do well in the warm temperatures we're likely to have in New York, and with a pair of trousers socks in London, which is bound to be chillier. They're not terribly expensive, either (though I will also point out that the leather isn't very high-quality – these are all about the look).
In a sensible you-know-you-won't-wear-heels-even-during-fashion-month moment, I packed these away to be shipped back to Zara. But for those of you who do enjoy heels on a regular (or Fashion Week-only) basis, I recommend them.
