John Ersing is a writer who loves Britney Spears. Like, REALLY loves Britney Spears. So we sent him to cover the premiere of her new line of lingerie. This is his review.
On a warm Tuesday afternoon during New York Fashion Week, press and paparazzi alike gathered at the New York Public Library’s Celeste Bartos Forum for the exclusive unveiling of The Intimate Britney Spears -- a line of lingerie and sleepwear with retail partner CHANGE Lingerie, designed to evoke vintage romance and poetry.
Prior to the show, Ms. Spears came over the speakers in a spoken-word narration of sorts. “I am an art, paint me in pastels,” she whispered in her legendary, hushed tone. “The softest blush of roses, playing peek-a-boo on sheer nylon. Paint me satin and embroider me with mother-of-pearl.” One by one, the models walked out and posed onstage while thumping instrumentals played overhead.
The collection, itself, was comprised of delicate underthings in muted shades of champagne, soft pastel pinks, and grays with vibrant, "Hot As Ice" red punctuated throughout. Styles were named after flowers: Buttercup, Calla, Ambrosia, Begonia, Amaryllis, and Camellia. Touches such as detailed shoulder straps, embellishments, crocheted edges, satin ribbons, and lace trim (no leather detected) were thoughtfully present throughout.
Normally with Britney, "What U See (Is What U Get)." But the collection apparently offers more than just the pieces that were shown at New York Fashion Week. In keeping with Britney’s Kentwood, Louisiana sensibilities, The Intimate Britney Spears also offers more casual sleepwear and loungewear in jersey -- chic takes on sweatpants and t-shirts. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is no footwear.
Just as the last model appeared and posed on the romantic bedroom-themed set, I started to get lightheaded and short of breath. She was about to take the floor. I could feel it. You could sense an air of tension and anticipation in the room -- witnessing a public appearance by Britney Spears outside of a performance or paparazzi shot is very rare (#blessed).
The Queen made her grand entrance in a blood orange jumpsuit, smiling and laughing -- clearly elated with the reaction to her show. "I want to thank the beautiful models today and all of you for coming. This is something that I've been working on for two-and-a-half years,” she told the room. “I'm really, really passionate about this, and I hope you all enjoyed it." Her “speech” lasted 15 seconds. I know because it all fit in one Instagram video. It was just so typically Britney: Give us a brief taste of southern charm, and leave us wanting more.
That Britney sure is a busy woman. Between performances of her smash "Piece of Me" show in Las Vegas, the icon has managed to successfully launch another venture that reminds us all why she owns us. Oops!...she did it again.
The Intimate Britney Spears will be sold online at www.barenecessities.com and at boutique retailers throughout the United States and Canada.
