Last awards season, the beauty press was abuzz with talk of the man bun, the glorious hairstyle beloved by dudes like Jared Leto, Alex Ebert and Joaquin Phoenix that often resembled a greasy bird's nest. We loved it.
However, while chatting with Aveda hairstylist Amy Farid backstage at Hood by Air on Sunday morning, we learned that another hairstyle copped from the ladies is having a moment on men's heads right now. That would be the man bob. Oh yes! Here's what Farid had to say about the trend:
"Man bobs is a moment. It's here. It's here. Get ready for it. It's kind of that '90s Johnny Depp — remember when Johnny Depp had that look? Like Michael Hutchence, but these kids today are taking it to the [next] level... I think some of it started in the streets, which is always skater boys like, 'Fuck it, I'm just going to cut my hair,' and then people in fashion, we see it and we're like, 'Oh my god. We love ittt.' Then everyone kind of starts doing that. Then [a model's] agent is like, 'He has long hair but we want to keep it long but not that long, so you're getting a man bob.' That's how our world works."
Given how much inspiration Kurt Cobain, the owner of recent history's most famous chin-length style, has provided the fashion industry, it was probably just a matter of time before it was embraced again. So, since we've given a nickname to the long bob — the "lob" — we should probably come up with something in the same vein for the man bob. The "mob"? A "glob" for guys with longer versions? We'll think on it. In the meantime, check out these 'dos we saw backstage, just in the span of Sunday morning.
