As promised, Romeo Beckham, 12-year-old progeny of Victoria and David, has returned for a second stint as the face of Burberry, adding some impish charm to an otherwise dreamy holiday campaign. The accompanying video, which features dancers wielding umbrellas and spinning in ball gowns before a mock cityscape of London, feels a lot like an extension of the runway show the brand held in Shanghai that had its models doing much the same.
The whole thing is excessive and fantastical, and the tight camel-and-black color palette, army of trenches and checked scarves, and romantically inclement weather make it 100 percent Burberry. Ed Harcourt, who performed at Burberry's Shanghai show, even wrote a gut-wrenchingly epic song for the occasion.
While it would be nice to see the brand go in a new direction, it makes total sense that it would stick to its core for the holiday season, which Burberry has already said looks to be a difficult retail environment. People aren't shopping for themselves, so now's the time to highlight the perennial favorites: Scarves, umbrellas, lipstick and trench coats. And, admittedly, the creative team did that pretty thoroughly. Check out the full video below.
