Until this fall, I never owned a parka -- I've always preferred dressier, more structured outerwear, like trench coats and vintage or military-inspired wool coats.
But recently I discovered that parkas, with their A-line shapes, can be incredibly flattering -- and need not always be casual. Whistles's wool mix parka, for example, combines classic parka elements, like cotton fabric and a drawstring waist, with more formal details, including wool-paneled sleeves and pocket flaps, and a thick, faux fur-lined hood. It's the kind of garment you can don on a gross, rainy day and feel perfectly put together -- and protected from the elements.
Whistles wool mix parka, $375, available at Whistles.
