Ankle boots were at the very top of my list for fall — I bought a very inexpensive pair of Zara booties last winter that I loved and completely wore out, and I wanted to find something as similar as possible: almond-shaped toe, thick heel and a textured or otherwise unusual finish. A pair, essentially, that would work both with pants and black tights and a skirt.
I probably tried eight or nine pairs in the $200-$500 range, and Madewell's "Patti" boot easily came out on top. The heel is much higher than I'm used to — 3.5 inches — but because it's so thick, I've had no trouble taking long walks in the city with them. In fact, they're more comfortable than the beloved Zara boots, which have a heel height of only 2.5 inches. What I like most of all is the shiny finish, which helps break up all the other blacks I'm usually wearing in winter (and looks pretty fancy, too).
And did I mention they're now on sale?
